Если исходить всё же из задачи про получение новостей с сайта, когда экспорт идёт только в твиттер, то можно написать скрипт примерно с такими параметрами: @имя, адрес сайта проекта (чтобы обрабатывать только ссылки на нужный сайт), описание с какого тега начинать копировать контент и с какого заканчивать.
Естественно, для каждой ленты придётся задавать эти параметры вручную, но, имхо, для такой задачи это приемлемо.

За основу можно взять например этот скрипт, мне он уже не раз помогал в случаях, когда на сайте плохой экспорт в RSS.

Например, здесь скрипт просто передаёт на выход содержимое ленты, указанной параметром urlInput1:

По умолчанию — оригинальный xkcd.

В случае с твиттером, наверное, можно взять Text input, куда передавать @имя, запрашивать API, получать RSS, парсить его… ну и так далее.

Но это всё для однотипных задач, конечно. Плюс разные расширения.

Но об этом же нужно уже знать! То есть никакой популяризации RSS не получается.

Вопрос скорее в другом, много ли людей пользутся RSS, когда многое есть в социальных сетях?

Насчет «редко пользуются». Я ей пользовался чаще, чем звездочкой, которая «добавить в закладки». Потому что закладки проще добавлять сразу в нужное место с помощью drag & drop. Благо из-за того, что в API осталась возможность получить ленту RSS, новости от важных проектов пока ещё можно получать, хоть они и испорченны вышеописанными проблемами:
api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=username

В целом, я не очень понимаю, почему люди отказываются от такого несложного решения, которое к тому же даёт их проектам некоторое число постоянных читателей, внимание которых распылено намного меньше, чем в тех же социалках и твиттере (где твитты больше похожи на чат).
