Russian 3D scanner manufacturer Thor3D launches its new device: the Calibry Mini

Made for scanning smalled objects, this affordable and lightweight solution, designed to be easy to use, can be a good choice for education and medical fields, as well as arts and museums.

Anna Zevelyov, CEO of Thor3D, mentions that the device will grant the doctors the ability to scan any part of the body and even perform full-body scans. Museums will now be able to capture various collections with art objects of different sizes. She adds that their engineers conducted multiple tests before release that showed impressive results.

According to her, the device will be a great addition to the company’s portfolio, making their Calibry product line even more versatile and compelling.

History of Thor3D and their expertise

Thor3D was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Moscow, Russia, although the company has branches in Dusseldorf, Germany. The brand developed several handheld scanners. Their first device was named Thor3D after the company and was capable of scanning larger objects as well as medium-sized ones.

That machine was discontinued some time ago and the company currently offers two devices: Drake and Calibry. The Drake 3D scanner was released in 2016 and features interchangeable camera lenses for different objects. It’s a wireless solution and also offers an additional projector to make the scanning results even more effective.

The Calibry is a newer 3D scanner. It was introduced in 2019 and features the company's proprietary camera solution, being Thor3D's first product to do so. It’s designed to work with challenging objects and can capture black and reflective objects and complex surfaces.

Calibry Mini 3D

The new Calibry Mini by Thor3D is the device designed to provide highly accurate scans of small objects, as well as medium-sized ones with the utmost accuracy. Even higher level of detail is now combined with the technical capabilities of the predecessor, – it’s clear what the machine could offer. It can scan even challenging surfaces and dark-colored objects, as well as shiny ones. Even the visible fingerprints will be captured.

The Calibry Mini 3D scanner continues to utilize the company’s proprietary camera solution. The specifications are impressive: the speed of up to 30 frames per second, three tracking modes and ability to capture objects sized from 2 to 30 cm. This makes the device a versatile solution focused on working with smaller objects than before. The software solution is easy to use and powerful.

Despite the name, the device does not weigh any less than its predecessor: it’s still 900 grams. The main advantage over the previous iteration is the accuracy. The blue LED technology allows the Mini too capture the objects with the accuracy of 0.07 mm and a resolution of 0.15 mm. It’s a significant improvement over the numbers of the previous iteration (0.1 mm and 0.6 mm respectively). The depth of view has been increased as well, now it’s 180-300 mm.

The company’s proprietary software solution that comes bundled with the device – Calibry Nest – is a powerful program that can be a great choice for educational field and those who don’t want to buy expensive software. The solution is now even more user-friendly, offering a quite intuitive design.
