Обалдеть. Помню, как пытался запустить эмулятор с этой игрой на компьютере без 3д ускорителя и получал полтора кадра в секунду с ужасной графикой и артефактами. Pentium 133Mhz. У папы в то время был Pentium MMX 166Mhz, который выдавал уже 2.5 кадра и можно было играть. Без звука, слайдшоу, зато Марио 64. А сейчас уже в браузере всё то же самое и без ущерба производительности. Неплохой прогресс за 20 лет.
На тот момент тоже можно было бы в браузере сделать, через activeX. Выдавало бы те же 1.5 — 2.5 кадра;) Просто смысла в этом небыло, т.к. браузер не был основной программой на компьютере.
Ну в браузере то оно поскольку-постольку. Unity же работает как флеш, через собственный плагин. Т.е., это не WebGL, не HTML5, это просто запущенная с помощью браузера нативная для вышей платформы программа. Потому и быстро.
Я начал эмулировать (и вообще узнал про существование) Nintendo 64 на Celeron-500 с GeForce 2 GTS. Работало идеально, счастья было море. Скачать из интернета игрушку в менее чем десяток мегабайт с полноценной и достаточно симпатичной 3D-графикой — это было чудо.

В Super Mario 64 теперь можно поиграть прямо в браузере
