Но самые вредные для окружающей среды — это, пожалуй, угольные электростанции, т.к. они загрязняют и атмосферу и воду. Не только продуктами горения, но и угольной пылью, мышьяком и тяжёлыми металлами (свинец, ртуть).
Кроме того, здесь практически нет тяжелой промышленности (есть только небольшое количество горнодобывающих предприятий и немного заводов), основные направления — туризм и сельское хозяйство.
Промышленность (25 % ВВП, 22 % работающих) — производство микропроцессоров, пищевая промышленность, медицинское оборудование, текстиль и одежда, строительные материалы, удобрения.
Сельское хозяйство (6 % ВВП, 14 % работающих) — бананы, ананасы, кофе, дыни, декоративные растения, сахар, кукуруза, рис, бобы, картофель; говядина, птица, молочные продукты; лесозаготовки.

Traditionally dependent on coffee, banana and beef exports, Costa Rica has diversified its economy. The opening of a large computer chip plant in the late 1990s was a fillip to the economy, but its fortunes have been subject to the fluctuating world demand for microchips.

Agriculture also plays a profound part in that country’s gross domestic product (GDP). It makes up about 6.5% of Costa Rica’s GDP, and 14% of the labor force.
