This comparison is organised around the two things people actually search for in this category: whether you can talk without an account, and whether the message cap disappears when you pay. Everything else — character libraries, media generation, memory — is secondary to those two, and most comparisons get that backwards.

What each platform gives you free, and what unlimited costs

#	Product	Best for	Rating	Free messages	Unlimited costs
1	AIGirl	Starting without a card	8.6	Yes, limits unpublished	~$5.90/mo
2	SpicyChat	Knowing what each tier buys	8.4	100/day	$14.95/mo
3	OurDream	Unlimited chat plus media	8.5	50/day + 55 coins	$9.99/mo annual
4	CrushOn	Daily use on the free tier	8.2	~100/day	from $5.99/mo
5	Candy AI	Conversations that run for months	8.1	~20 total	$5.99/mo annual
6	Janitor AI	Using your own model	7.7	~50/day	$9.99/mo + key
7	Character AI	The biggest character library	6.5	~100/day	$9.99/mo
8	Chai	Twenty minutes at a time	6.0	70/day	from $13.99/mo

Figures come from vendor pages and published 2026 reviews, current as of October 7, 2026. No testing claims: none was done. Two product pages were read directly; the rest come from public pricing and review coverage, and disagreements between sources are named in the entries rather than averaged away.

How these eight were compared

The free allowance, stated in messages. Not "generous free tier" — a number. The spread here runs from 20 total to 100 a day, which is the difference between a demo and a product.

Whether an account is required. Several platforms in this category advertise no sign-up and then require an email at the first message. Only one here lets you reach a paid tier without a card on file at any point.

What removes the cap and what it costs. Unlimited messaging appears at $9.99 on one platform and $14.95 on another, and on a third it never appears at all because the ceiling is the context window rather than a quota.

Where the conversation stops being coherent. A message cap is a billing decision; the context window is an engineering one. Two platforms here hold conversations past a hundred messages and three fade at around thirty, and no pricing page mentions it.

What media costs on top. Three of the eight run a second currency. On those, the subscription is a floor.

Response speed and queuing. One platform here queues free users at peak hours, which is a form of cap that does not appear in any message count.

1. AIGirl — Best for starting without a card

Rating: 8.6

AIGirl is first because it removes the thing that stops most people from trying this category at all: a payment method on file. The free tier works without one, and the paid plan is around $5.90 a month, the cheapest here.

The platform describes itself as 18+ AI characters for chat and roleplay, with over 84,000 characters and 48 million conversations started. Review coverage consistently notes that the conversational tone holds across an exchange rather than flattening — which is what you are actually buying in an ai chat app, and what cheap platforms usually get wrong.

What it does not have: image generation on any tier, voice of any kind, a mobile app, an annual discount, or crypto payment. Memory recalls recent detail rather than maintaining a store. The character roster is thinner than pricier competitors.

Pros

Free tier with no card required, and the lowest paid entry here at around $5.90
Tone holds across a conversation instead of going flat after a few turns
84,000 characters is a large library for the price

Cons

No published message limits, so the free allowance is unpredictable
Text only, no app, and memory that does not persist meaningfully

Privacy & moderation Nothing published on retention or deletion. Not requiring a card is itself a privacy property worth counting.

The right first month for anyone who has not used one of these before.

2. SpicyChat — Best for knowing what each tier buys

Rating: 8.4

SpicyChat publishes the clearest pricing ladder in this comparison, and in a category where "unlimited" is usually asterisked that is worth a lot. Free gives 100 messages a day. Basic at $4.99 raises it to 500 and removes ads. Premium at $14.95 makes messaging unlimited and switches to better models. Ultra at $24.95 adds priority responses and early access to new models.

Every step states what changes. No coins, no credits, no tokens.

The ceiling is memory rather than messages: reported to fade past 20–30 messages, which for an unlimited plan is an odd combination — you can send as many messages as you like, but the conversation resets its understanding well before you run out.

Pros

Every tier states its message cap, which almost nobody else does
$4.99 for 500 messages a day and no ads is the best value step in this list
No second currency at any tier

Cons

Memory fades past 20–30 messages regardless of tier
Unlimited messaging requires the $14.95 tier, three times the entry price

Privacy & moderation Not published in the sources used here. Filtering is described as minimal relative to mainstream platforms.

Best choice if you want to buy exactly one thing and know what it is.

3. OurDream — Best for unlimited chat plus media

Rating: 8.5

OurDream includes unlimited messaging in its base paid tier alongside image generation, video generation, and voice calls, plus 1,000 DreamCoins a month. Pricing is $19.99 monthly or $119.88 a year, which is $9.99 a month. The free tier is 50 messages a day with 55 coins.

Among platforms that offer unlimited text, this is the only one where the same subscription also covers media without a separate purchase — though the coins meter how much media you actually get. Ten coins per image, one coin per second of voice, 100–450 per video. A ten-minute call is 600 of your 1,000.

Memory is described as cross-session, with the $59.99 Deluxe tier advertising triple the depth.

Pros

Unlimited messaging at $9.99 a month on annual, the cheapest unlimited tier here
Media included rather than requiring another subscription
Free tier large enough to evaluate properly at 50 messages a day

Cons

The coin allowance covers roughly sixteen minutes of voice a month
Deeper memory sits behind the $59.99 tier

Privacy & moderation End-to-end encryption claimed on the product page. Nothing published about deleting history.

The pick if you want one subscription instead of four.

4. CrushOn — Best for daily use on the free tier

Rating: 8.2

CrushOn gives around 100 messages a day free with short-term memory and restricted content. That is enough to hold a real conversation every day indefinitely without paying, which makes it the best free ai chat in this list for people who are not sure they want to subscribe to anything.

Paid pricing is the weak point of the entry: published 2026 sources list different ladders — $5.99 / $14.99 / $49.90 in one, roughly $3.90 / $7.90 / $14.90 in another. Check the site before paying. Annual billing arrived in 2026 at around 30% off, memory depth is the stated difference between tiers, and a 2026 update pushed upper-tier recall past roughly a hundred messages.

Model selection is exposed to the user, which in an ai chat app is the most consequential setting there is and almost nobody offers it.

Pros

Around 100 free messages a day, usable indefinitely
Model choice exposed to the user rather than fixed by the platform
Upper tiers hold context past a hundred messages, better than most here

Cons

Published prices contradict each other by more than double
The free tier runs short memory deliberately, so it understates the paid product

Privacy & moderation Nothing published about retention or deletion. Content gating by tier implies in-flight classification.

The best free option, and a reasonable paid one once you have checked the current price.

5. Candy AI — Best for conversations that run for months

Rating: 8.1

Candy AI sells memory in explicit durations: session-only free, roughly thirty days on Premium, permanent with custom training on Ultra. Premium is $12.99 monthly or about $5.99 annual; Ultra $16.99 monthly, $11.99 annual.

In this comparison it is the answer to a specific problem. Unlimited messaging is common; a platform that still knows what you discussed last month is not. If your use is one long-running conversation rather than many short ones, the ceiling that matters is memory and nothing else on this list addresses it directly.

The free tier is a demonstration at around twenty messages total and one image.

Pros

The only platform here selling memory duration as a stated feature
Custom training on Ultra lets you seed what the system knows
Premium at roughly $5.99 annual is competitive with the cheapest tiers here

Cons

Twenty free messages is not enough to evaluate anything
Permanent memory costs $143.88 a year

Privacy & moderation No published retention or deletion process. Metered media means usage is logged.

Right if continuity matters more than volume.

6. Janitor AI — Best for using your own model

Rating: 7.7

Janitor AI runs free at around 50 messages a day on its built-in JanitorLLM, with Pro at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. The distinctive part is that you can supply your own API key from a third-party provider instead, at $10–40 a month on top plus setup.

That makes it the only platform here where the model is your decision rather than the vendor's. The trade is effort and a second bill, and your conversations then also pass through that provider under its policies.

Memory is reported to fade past 20–30 messages.

Pros

Model is yours to choose, not the platform's
Free built-in model means you can evaluate before paying anyone
$99.99 a year is fair for the interface alone

Cons

Good output effectively requires a paid key, $10–40 a month on top
Setup is not beginner-friendly and memory fades past 20–30 messages

Privacy & moderation With your own key, a second provider also holds your conversations. Read both policies.

For people comfortable with API keys who want control over the engine.

7. Character AI — Best for the biggest character library

Rating: 6.5

Character AI has the largest library in the category — millions of community characters and free creation tools — and around 100 free messages a day with voice included. Pricing as of September 2026: free, lite $2.99 a month or $1.49 a week, c ai+ $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year.

Two things hold it back. Context is the shortest of the platforms compared: published testing describes detail loss from around turn twenty and roughly a fifth of early-session content retained by turn forty, with reports of loss from fifteen messages earlier. And since early 2026 the free tier carries full-screen ads mid-conversation, regeneration limits behind an in-app currency, and queuing at peak hours — three caps that do not appear in any message count.

Pros

Largest character library by a wide margin, with free creation tools
Cheapest paid entry here at $2.99 a month
Voice included on the free tier

Cons

Shortest effective context of the platforms compared
Ads, regeneration limits, and peak-hour queuing on free since early 2026

Privacy & moderation The strictest moderation in this comparison, applied consistently.

Good for browsing characters, weak for sustained conversation.

8. Chai — Best for twenty minutes at a time

Rating: 6.0

Chai gives 70 free messages a day with paid plans from around $13.99 a month for unlimited messaging. It is fast and has effectively no onboarding.

At $13.99 it sits in the same bracket as SpicyChat Premium, without a published memory architecture or media features to justify the comparison.

Pros

70 free messages a day is a workable casual allowance
No setup at all

Cons

$13.99 buys more elsewhere in this list
Nothing published about memory or context behaviour

Privacy & moderation Not described in the sources used here.

Fine free, hard to justify paid.

What an ai chat app actually costs over a year

Monthly prices in this category are close enough that they look interchangeable. Over twelve months they are not, because three of them have annual billing and the rest do not, and because the second currency compounds.

Platform	Monthly	Annual total	Saving	Media on top
AIGirl	~$5.90	~$70.80	none offered	n/a, text only
SpicyChat Basic	$4.99	$59.88	none published	none
SpicyChat Premium	$14.95	$179.40	none published	none
OurDream	$19.99	$119.88	50%	coins
CrushOn	from $5.99	~30% off annually	~30%	none published
Candy AI Premium	$12.99	$71.88	54%	tokens
Janitor AI	$9.99	$99.99	17%	your API key
Character AI c ai+	$9.99	$94.99	21%	none
Chai	from $13.99	not published	none published	none

Two things fall out of that table. OurDream's annual rate is half its monthly, which makes it cheaper over a year than SpicyChat Premium while including media SpicyChat does not have. And the cheapest twelve-month commitment in the whole list is SpicyChat Basic at $59.88 for 500 messages a day — more than most people use, with no currency on top.

The one to watch is Janitor AI. The $99.99 annual looks mid-range until you add the API key most users need, which at $10–40 a month puts the real annual figure between $220 and $580.

Who each platform is actually for

You have never used one and are not sure you want to. AIGirl — no card, lowest price, and the conversation quality is the part it does well.

You want one thing and want to know what it costs. SpicyChat — every tier states its cap, no currencies, and $4.99 buys more daily messages than most people send.

You want everything and one bill. OurDream — unlimited text plus media at $9.99 a month annual, as long as voice use is modest.

You want to keep a single conversation going for months. Candy AI — the only platform here selling retention in stated durations.

You want to pick the engine. CrushOn in the interface, or Janitor AI with your own key.

You want breadth of characters above all. Character AI, accepting the short context and the free-tier advertising.

The caps nobody puts on the pricing page

The context window is the real limit. Message caps are a billing decision and vanish when you pay. The context window does not. Three platforms here fade past 20–30 messages, which means an unlimited plan can still reset its understanding of the conversation several times an hour.

Queuing is a cap. Character AI queues free users at peak hours. That does not reduce your message count, it just makes the messages arrive slowly, and it is invisible in any comparison based on allowances.

Regeneration limits are a cap. Being able to send a message but not to ask for a different answer is a restriction most people hit before they hit a message cap.

A second currency is a cap. Where media runs on coins, generating is capped by the coin balance regardless of what the subscription says about messages.

What breaks across the whole category

Three complaints recur in 2026 coverage regardless of which ai chat app people are using, and all three are invisible on a pricing page.

The model changes and the conversation changes with it. When a platform swaps or retunes its model, users describe the characters as suddenly different — flatter, more formal, less willing. Nothing in the interface announces it, and support usually cannot confirm it. Platforms running their own models are not immune; they are simply the ones who decided to do it.

Paying can make memory worse. There are repeated reports of recall degrading after an upgrade rather than improving. The mechanism is usually a tier change that moves the account onto a different pipeline, not an extension of the old one. The practical advice is to repeat your memory test after any upgrade rather than assuming the expensive tier is better at everything.

The free tier is quietly re-costed. Character AI's free allowance did not shrink in message count during early 2026 — it gained advertising, regeneration limits, and peak-hour queuing instead. Message counts are the most visible number and therefore the last one platforms touch.

Running your own instead

Everything an ai chat app does can be assembled locally, and for some people that is the better answer.

A 7B–14B open-weight model runs on a single consumer GPU with 12–24 GB of VRAM at usable speed; quantised builds lower the requirement at some quality cost. There is no message cap, no queue, and the context window is whatever you decide to pay for in memory and latency rather than what a product manager decided. Conversation history is a file on your disk.

The companion layer — persona in a system prompt, a vector store for extracted facts, a summarisation pass over older turns — is a few hundred lines against an embedding model and a local database, and several open projects package it ready to run.

What you give up: image and video generation at reasonable speed without a much larger card, a mobile client, a character library, and persona consistency. A stock instruct model drifts out of character faster than any hosted platform in this comparison, and closing that gap is real work.

Honest summary: self-hosting removes the caps entirely, gives you the window, and costs you polish and media. For most people the sensible arrangement is a hosted platform for daily use and a local model for the things hosted platforms will not do.

How to choose an ai chat app for your case

Count the free messages before anything else. 20 total and 100 a day are different products. If a platform does not publish the number, assume it is low.

Decide whether you need unlimited or just more. SpicyChat Basic at $4.99 for 500 a day is enough for almost anyone, and it is a third of the price of unlimited.

Test the context, not the cap. Hold one conversation past forty turns and see whether early detail still comes back. This matters more than any quota.

Check whether a card is required to try it. AIGirl is the only platform here where it is not.

If you want to pick the model, there are two options. CrushOn exposes it in the interface; Janitor AI takes your own key. Nothing else here lets you choose.

What to check before you pay

The current price on the site. CrushOn's tiers differ across sources by more than double.
Whether unlimited means messages or everything. On OurDream messaging is unlimited and media is metered by coins.
What the context window does at forty turns. No pricing page states this; test it.
Whether the free tier has hidden caps — ads, regeneration limits, queuing.
Whether a second provider is involved. On Janitor AI with your own key, two companies hold your conversations.
Whether the account can be deleted. None of the eight publish a clear process.

A note on the character library

Three platforms here compete primarily on how many characters they have: Character AI with millions, OurDream claiming over 11 million, AIGirl with 84,000. That number is the least useful figure in the category and worth saying why.

A character is a short text definition: a persona description, a few personality traits, an example exchange, and a greeting. Volume is a function of how many users wrote one, not of platform quality. Browsing a library of eleven million is not a feature so much as a search problem, and in practice most people use a handful and then make their own.

What matters more is whether the platform lets you create and keep your own characters, whether the definition is portable, and how much of the context window the definition consumes. A long elaborate character card on a platform with a short window eats the history it was supposed to enrich — which is why an elaborate character sometimes feels less coherent than a simple one on the same platform.

None of the eight here publish how much of the window a character definition occupies. The practical test is to run the same conversation with a minimal character and an elaborate one and see which loses the thread first.

FAQ

What is the best free ai chat app? CrushOn and Character AI at around 100 messages a day are the most generous. AIGirl is the only one that does not ask for a card.

Is there an ai chat with no sign up at all? Every platform here eventually requires an account to keep conversation history, because without one there is nowhere to store it. The practical equivalent is a free tier that does not require payment details, which is what AIGirl offers.

Which has unlimited messages and no filter? SpicyChat Premium at $14.95 and OurDream at $9.99 annual both offer unlimited messaging with minimal filtering. OurDream is cheaper and includes media.

Why does the conversation lose track even on an unlimited plan? Unlimited refers to the message count, not the context window. Three platforms here fade past 20–30 messages regardless of tier.

Which ai chat app has the best memory? Candy AI on its Ultra tier is the only one here advertising permanent memory. CrushOn's upper tiers hold past roughly a hundred messages.

Can I use my own model? On Janitor AI with an API key, at $10–40 a month on top. On CrushOn you choose from the platform's options without a key.

Is there a mobile app? Character AI has one. AIGirl does not. The rest run in a browser, which works on a phone without installing anything.

What does an ai chat app actually cost per month if I use it daily? Between $4.99 and $20 for the subscription, plus media currency where it applies. On OurDream, daily voice use adds roughly the cost of the subscription again.

The bottom line

For a first ai chat app, AIGirl: around $5.90 a month, no card for the free tier, and the lowest possible cost of deciding this is not for you.

For the clearest value at a specific level, SpicyChat Basic at $4.99 for 500 messages a day and no ads — more than most people use, at a third of the price of unlimited.

For unlimited messaging with images and voice in one bill, OurDream at $9.99 a month annual, as long as you have priced the coins.

And whichever you choose, test the fortieth turn before you subscribe. Message caps are published, honest, and easy to compare. The context window is none of those things, and it is what actually ends the conversation.
