In May you will participate in SQA Days-17 — a major conference in the software testing in the CIS and Eastern Europe. You will visit this conference for the first time as well as Belarus. What are your feelings and expectations? How do you prepare for this trip?
В мае вы будете участвовать в SQA Days-17 — главной конференции по тестированию ПО в СНГ и Восточной Европе. Вы посетите эту конференцию впервые, как и саму страну Беларусь. Чего вы ждете от поездки? Как вы готовитесь к ней?
RB: I’m looking forward to seeing Minsk, and hope to have time to see the major museums and cultural sites. I always like to learn about the people, the culture, the art, and the food when I visit a place. As for the conference itself, I am going to prepare a new keynote speech, especially for the event, designed to cover topics I think the audience will find interesting. I’m also presenting our very popular one-day seminar on risk-based testing, which has been used by audiences around the world to learn how to apply this powerful testing strategy in real-world situations.
РБ: Я с нетерпением жду момента, когда я смогу увидеть Минск, и надеюсь, что у меня найдется время, чтобы посетить главные музеи и увидеть памятники культуры. Мне всегда нравится узнавать что-то новое о народе, культуре, искусстве и национальной кухне страны, которую я посещаю. Что касается самой конференции, то я собираюсь подготовить вступительную речь специально для этого события, которая затронет, по-моему, интересные для аудитории темы. Я также представлю наш очень популярный однодневный тренинг относительно тестирования, основанного на риске, который был уже представлен различным аудиториям во всем мире, чтобы люди смогли научиться применять эту полезную стратегию тестирования в реальных ситуациях.
You will make a keynote talk within the conference as well as a workshop before the conference. Could you tell about it in more details?
Перед конференцией вы будете проводить тренинг, также будете представлены в рамках основной программы конференции. Не могли бы вы рассказать об этом более подробно?
RB: At this point, I’m still working on the presentation. I’m researching the specific audience so that I can focus on topics relevant to them.

You had to work before in this region. How do you assess the software market in the post-Soviet countries?
Вам раньше приходилось работать в этом регионе, как вы оцениваете рынок ПО в постсоветских странах?
RB: Clearly, Eastern Europe is an important location for software development, especially near-shore development for European companies. The strong legacy of science, technology, engineering, and math education and industry left by the Soviet era provides a strong advantage.
РБ: Очевидно, что территория Восточной Европы является важным местом развития программного обеспечения, особенно в близлежащих европейских компаниях. Оставшиеся от советской эпохи открытия в области науки, технологии, инженерии и математики, образования и промышленности являются для них важным преимуществом.
Many consider your book «Сritical Testing Processes» to be very interesting. That is the book that is read in one breath. But at the same time, it is noted, that it is written in a very difficult language, which can be understood only the professionals. How do you think, maybe it is possible to write a book about software testing in plain language, so that everything would be clear even for an IT unenlightened person?
Многие считают вашу книгу «Ключевые процессы тестирования» очень интересной. Книгой, которая читается на одном дыхании. Но при этом отмечают, что она написана очень сложным языком, понять который могут только профессионалы. Как думаете, возможно ли написать книгу по тестированию ПО простым языком. Так, чтобы все написанное было понятно даже непросвещенному в IT человеку?
RB: As a matter of fact, I have published two books that are more targeted for entry-level people: Foundations of Software Testing and Fundamentos de Prueba de Software. The second book is in Spanish, but the English text could also be translated into Russian, if the market were there.
РБ: На самом деле, мной были изданы две книги, предназначенные для людей начального уровня: «Основы тестирования программного обеспечения» на английском и «Fundamentos de Prueba de Software» на испанском. При необходимости книга могла бы быть переведена и на русский язык.
Generally you deal with large projects. It is believed that many invented and described in your book processes are impossible in the realities of small companies. Do you agree?
Вы работаете в основном в крупных проектах. Существует мнение, что многие придуманные и описанные вами процессы недопустимы в реалиях маленьких компаний. Вы с этим согласны?
RB: Certainly the project described in Critical Testing Processes is large. When dealing with smaller projects, while the same processes generally are important, removing formality and streamlining processes is necessary.
РБ: Конечно, проект, описанный в книге «Ключевые процессы тестирования», является крупным и серьезным. Устранение формальности и оптимизация процессов важны и при работе с небольшими проектами.
The whole process from the beginning of the planning to the project completion is described in detail in your book. What kind of force majeure does occur more often in the process, and how can it be solved better with minimal losses?
У вас в книге подробно описан весь процесс: от начала планирования, до сдачи проекта. А какие форс-мажоры чаще всего возникают в процессе и, как их лучше всего решить с наименьшими потерями?
RB: The most frequent disruptive forces for testing come from external factors such as poor upstream development and QA practices. However, test organizations can create problems for themselves, too. For example, by not managing test data and test environments properly, bugs are missed and false positives occur. As another example, trying to manage large, complex testing efforts without the necessary tool support can result in significant inefficiencies.
РБ: Наиболее частые форс-мажоры возникают во время тестирования из-за таких внешних факторов, как недостаточная разработка данных и плохое обеспечение качества. Тем не менее, организаторы тестирования могут сами создать себе проблемы. Например, не справляясь с потоком тестовых данных и средой тестирования должным образом, они упустят некоторые ошибки, и автоматически произойдет ложное срабатывание. В качестве другого примера можно привести попытку управления большим и сложным тестированием без необходимой инструментальной поддержки, что приведет к значительному снижению эффективности.
Being a tester, the first few years you «had to fight just to survive». Do you have any useful advice for beginners? What would you say to your son, who has just graduated from high school and going to follow his father's steps?
Будучи тестировщиком, первые несколько лет вы «провели в борьбе за то, чтобы просто «удержаться на плаву». А есть у вас какой-нибудь универсальный совет для начинающих? Чтобы вы сказали своему сыну, который только что окончил школу, и собирается пойти по стопам отца?
RB: Well, I have two daughters. I don’t think they intend to become testers, but, if they did, I’d suggest the following:
— Get a computer science degree, and know how to program
— Get ISTQB certified, starting with the Foundation. Move to the relevant Advanced level after three years.
— Don’t follow fads, but instead focus on best practices, which are proven over time
— Read at least three books on testing a year, including books by authors who disagree
— Don’t follow any single guru, don’t believe in “schools of testing,” don’t do anything that closes you off to the whole range of ideas in testing
— Learn a variety of test tools
I think that a tester who did those things in the first five years of their careers would be well-positioned for success.
РБ: Ну, кроме сына, у меня есть еще две дочери. Я не думаю, что они захотят стать тестировщиками, но, если бы они все-таки захотели, я бы посоветовал им следующее:
-Получить образование в сфере вычислительной техники и научиться программировать
-Получить сертификат ISTQB, начиная с базового уровня. Через три года дойти до продвинутого уровня.
-Не гнаться за пустыми фантазиями, а вместо этого сосредоточиться на получении практического опыта, который оправдает себя через некоторое время
-Читать как минимум три книги о тестировании год, в том числе книги авторов, которые разделяют другие идеи
-Не следовать вслепую за каким-нибудь одним ведущим специалистом, не верить в «школы тестирования», не делать ничего такого, что препятствовало бы выполнению идей в тестировании
-Изучить большое количество инструментов для тестирования
Я думаю, что у тестировщика, который последует этим советам в течение первых пяти лет своей карьеры, будут все шансы для успеха.
